What happened
Starbucks rolled out Automated Counting, built with NomadGo, to all 11,300 company-operated stores in North America to scan backroom shelves with iPads and tally items like milk and syrups. Fast Company reported frequent errors, such as fridge reflections doubling milk counts, misidentified items and lost progress on weak Wi-Fi, and a shift supervisor told Fortune it grew less accurate over time. Starbucks told NomadGo on April 3, 2026 that it was ending the tool and told baristas on May 18 that it was retired. Starbucks said that when the tool fell short, it listened to feedback and changed course.
