What happened
New York City launched the MyCity chatbot under Mayor Eric Adams in fall 2023 to help business owners check city rules, built on Microsoft's cloud platform. Testing by The Markup and THE CITY in 2024 found it gave answers that would lead businesses to break the law, such as saying bosses could take a cut of workers' tips. In January 2026, Mayor Zohran Mamdani called it functionally unusable and named it as a place to save money, saying it cost around half a million dollars. The city took it down in early February 2026, and its page now says the beta test has ended.
